Combat theft — register your equipment

Equipment theft in the billions of dollars affects American Rental Association (ARA) members across the country every year. Registering your equipment increases the chances that it will be identified as stolen and returned to you.

Thanks to ARA’s partnership with the National Equipment Register (NER), members can register up to 1,000 pieces of mobile, off-road equipment with NER’s HELPTech database for free. Many insurance companies offer a deductible waiver of up to $10,000 if you have a piece of equipment on the registry and it gets stolen.

ARA members also can initiate an equipment theft alert through NER; having equipment registered with NER is not a requirement and NER needs only the following to produce an initial theft report:

  • Machine make, model, serial number/product identification number
  • Date of loss
  • Location of loss
  • Circumstances of loss

Other information that is important, but not required, to make an initial report includes the police agency the crime is reported to and case number, renter information, images of the equipment and insurance company/claim number. The more information that is available, the more useful the report is to law enforcement.

To report a theft by phone or email, contact an NER analyst at 866-663-7872, option 5, or at info@ner.net.

To learn more about the benefits of ARA’s partnership with NER, visit ARArental.org/risk-management/ner or call ARA’s member services team at 800-334-2177.
