Ri$k Happens: Noted

May. 22, 2022 - By Mary Ann Gormly, CERP - Loss Analyst, ARA Insurance

A delivery driver for a rental store backed into a parking lot to get close enough to the loading dock to unload the tables and chairs on order for an event. Every parking spot was full and the lot was very congested.

As the driver backed up, she didn’t see a small dark colored car in her blind spot. She backed into the passenger’s side bumper, denting the car and scraping paint off the side. Her delivery truck wasn’t damaged at all because it was the trailer hitch that caught the smaller car.

She went into the office of the venue and asked if they knew who owned the car. They did not. The building held many offices and a couple of event spaces. No one was familiar with the car she showed them on her phone.

The delivery driver asked for a piece of paper and a pen. She wrote a note to put on the car, letting the owner know what happened and how to reach her company. She included her name and phone number.

When she got back to the rental yard, she let her manager know what happened. They contacted their insurance company and started a claim so when the owner of the vehicle contacts them, the process would have already begun.
