Ri$k Happens: Remind your drivers not to drink and drive

Jan. 16, 2022 - By Mary Ann Gormly, CERP - Loss Analyst, ARA Insurance

Alcohol is not the only beverage that can wreak havoc for a driver. If your drivers are going to drink soda, water, tea, juice or whatever their beverage of choice, remind them not to take their eyes off the road to reach for their containers. One driver did not heed that warning.

The delivery driver took his eyes off the road for just a couple of seconds to reach his drink and drifted into a guardrail. He scraped along the guardrail for a short time which caused the guardrail to break away.

The truck went over the embankment as the guardrail buckled and split in two.

The truck and driver slid along the slope of the hill to the bottom. The driver was not seriously hurt but the truck was totaled, and a heavy machinery tow truck was needed to retrieve it from the ravine. A claim was reported to the rental store’s insurance company and the accident will be reviewed and paid according to the wording in their policy.
