ARA Coronavirus Discussion Group: What is ‘normal’ for rental?

Aug. 09, 2020

The ARA Coronavirus Discussion Group on Facebook allows those in the equipment and event rental industry to discuss what’s going on in their businesses and ask questions to fellow members during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Each week, Rental Pulse will highlight a post from the week that garnered attention about a specific topic. This week’s post is from a member who is new to rental and doesn’t have much history to compare 2020 with other years.

“Hi everyone, I am a new rental owner in my second full year renting heavy equipment. I have seen a significant uptick in business year to year and trying to get a feel if this is a ‘normal’ year for rentals or if the market is red hot due to the high % of people staying at home doing projects. Trying to be cautious with how much I invest, when in my mind, a slowdown is likely. Any market updates, or trends from other people? I am in Michigan.”

This post has nearly 40 comments from other members of the group. These comments come from group members throughout the U.S. and include companies in all segments of rental. The comments range from companies saying how their revenue is different in 2020 vs. other years to those with advice on being cautious on investments to what other members have seen in their areas of the country. Overall, the posts are saying it is far from “normal,” but they are glad to hear of a member having a good year.
